Ballet terms are in French.
These terms are sometimes used in Jazz, Modern, Colorguard, and
other types of dance. Below are some commonly used dance steps.
Chassé-to chase
Jeté-to jump
Grand jeté-a large jump. You can either
développé into it or do it with a brushing straight
leg
Piqué-to prick. To step directly onto
demi-pointe or pointe with a straight leg.
Pas de bourrée-a step of the bourrée.
Usually done in three steps. Example: right, left, right. There
are numerous ways to do this step.
Glissade-to glide. A brushing jump from one leg
to the other
Fouetté-to whip. A jump where you change
your body direction in the air.
Pirouette-a stationary turn done on one leg.
Arabesque-a leg position where the leg is in
the back and straight.
Attitude-a leg position where the leg is bent.
Envelopé-to envelope. A backwards développé.

Devant-a position in the front
En avant-an action that moves to the front
En arrière-an action that moves to the
back
Derrière-a position in the back
En tournant-while turning.
Croisé-facing crossed to the audience
Failli-to fall through.
Chaînés-chains or
links-turns done on both legs
Promenade-to walk
